Discussion on Footing for a round pen
Author Message

I'm also interested in putting up a round pen and will be watching the postings above for advice. My question regards the footing. Sand is I assume the most economical, but how do you prepare the base and keep the sand inside the pen if it doesn't have the solid panel at the bottom. Those seem to be much more expensive than I can justify for just the two horses I have. Any advice or ideas on alternate footing or on the pen itself will be a big help to me. Thanks, Julie

Julie,

The type of soil you are putting the round pen on will dictate alot of your construction and materials. We have heavy clay soil here (absolutely not good for drainage) and all our pens must be slightly raised in the center and sloped out to the edges to assist with drainage, else every time it rains we have an unusable pen. To keep the sand in the pen you might use landscaping timbers around the base. I have a detailed article from one of my horse magazines on base construction. If you are interested I could scan it for you and email in a day or two.
