Discussion on 1st time worming for 9 month old fillie
Author Message

I have a 9 month old fillie, which I weaned 2 months ago, but has never been wormed. The mom was wormed regularly. I need to worm this fillie, but after reading the post about worming which caused "overload" and eventual death to a young horse, I am concerned about what is the safe procedure here. thanks. wayne wride

Hello K,
You are right to be careful. Review the article on Deworming and check under the heading Deworming a Debilitated horse. It gives instructions on this procedure.

Dr. O

I read the article, but couldn't find "*dose" defined as opposed to a "whole dose." This is a paso fino fillie, and to look at her she is in perfect health, and weighs about 400 lbs.

When you read the instructions on deworming debilitated or wormy horses there are two terms used a "whole dose" and a "1/2 dose".
1) "Whole dose" refers to using a regular dose that is to spin off the estimated weight of your horse using the dosage ring on the tube and give that.
2) "1/2 dose" refers to using 1/2 a whole dose.

Wayne is the 1/2 not showing up in your browser?
