There was a horse at my barn who lost a shoe and I didn't know how to tape up the horse's hoof. I know that I need to know this for the future with my horse. How do you wrap the hoof, why you wrap it, and with what materials do you use? Thanks

I go through this alot with Levi. I just purchased Old Mac Boots, it is much easier. It would depend on for what reason the horse is shod. Levi is for therapeutic reasons, so he must be in shoes. He just lost his shoe today as a matter of fact. Farrier won't be back till next week, so I hope he will be ok with just boots on. I have tried taping the shoe back on his foot, doesn't work well. Boots work the best. Keeps them from chipping. suz

Hello Jeanne, We have detailed instructions on bandaging a foot at Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » First Aid for Foot Disease in Horses. You bandage a foot for the same reason you bandage anything: to protect it. DrO

Another reason for wrapping the foot is to keep it from chipping so the shoe can be reset without too much filing. One posibility is to keep a couple of hoof pads handy for different size feet. These you can trim to size and wrap or tape to the bottom the the foot. The pad keeps the toe from wearing through as fast.

I use a boot like Susan. but when my horse hurts it's self near the hoop I fix, bandage and then use Mothers little helper - DUCT TAPE !!! Gotta love that stuff. I have a gelding now with a small scrape on the cornet and it's duct taped up for 2 days - stuff is industructable and CHEAP. make sure it's not too tight and clean under neath when you make the "bandage". I doubt though that it would work for a shoe. the impact adn abrasion on the ground would wear it out quickly. so Mac's or EZ boots work great! Keep them on hand for the emergencies.
