Discussion on Help! Have I Just Poisoned My Foal???

I came rushing to this website after doing exactly the same thing with a "Noromectin" wormer produced by Norbrook Laboratories... on a 2 month old but very large filly foal. These are the cheapest ivermectin wormers on sale in Ireland and now I know why... I didn't push the syringe particularly hard but the stop-ring just collapsed right up and the whole dose went in.

I managed to hook out a good finger full so I figure I have given a dose for a 450 kg horse to a foal weighing I guess about 100-150 kgs.

What a wonderful, wonderful resource this is. I will be getting up bright and early to check on the foal tomorrow morning but at least I won't be a) ringing my vet at this late hour and making an idiot of myself or b) lying awake all night worrying. And I absolutely fell about at Bonita's description of her face and the foal's reaction - snap!

In my case for some bizarre reason I also decided on the spur of the moment to get rid of the finger full of ivermectin paste on a nervy and headshy mare boarding here that I have been trying to tame for the past couple of weeks - not the best move!

Kudos to Dr O and all the members for making this site so absolutely brilliant!

All the best

Thanks for the letting us know how we are helping and don't forget there is specific toxicity information at Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Dewormers (Anthelminics) » Ivermectin.

And the foal is absolutely fine... I don't think anything that can scratch its ear with its hind leg can be having co-ordination difficulties!

All the best
