Discussion on Ca issues and the arabian?
Author Message

Posted on Monday, Jul 15, 2002 - 6:30 am:

I have seen an occasional reference to Ca issues in Arabians that are fed alfalfa? Could you tell me what these issues are if any?

My Arab is on the high fat EPSM diet and gets a small amount (maybe 2 lbs/day) of alfalfa pellets to absorb the oil. Our hay for this year has clover in it. Should I be avoiding this? Is clover and alfalfa the same thing?

Thanks, Kim

Hello Kim,
For more information on this problem see the article Diseases: GI: Colic: Enteroliths. Clover, though it is a legume and high in calcium, no one has associated it with the problem.
