Discussion on WIll our horses eat Oak Trees in our pastures?
Author Message

Posted on Friday, Jul 19, 2002 - 10:31 am:

I manage a small private farm with about 10 acres of pasture in Southwest Florida. We turn out 8 horses in these areas sometimes almost 24 hours a day if weather permits. We want to plant some mature oaks for shade, but I am worried that they will eat the bark and leaves. I am worried about the health of the trees and my horses! I know that horses will chew on pretty much anything in sight, so I need some advice!

Thanks!

Hello Helen,
Though hard to predict, horses will frequently chew on the bark of trees even when forage is available. You will find recommendations in this section, Care for Horses: Nutrition: Horses Eating Things They Shouldn't: Pica, Coprophagia, Trees. For information on the toxicity of oak see Equine Diseases: Poisons , Venoms & Poisonous Plants.
