I am a recent 1st time horse owner. We had them as kids but this is the 1st one i have owned. At the end of June she gave us a new foal (LACEY). At 1st everything was fine and the when she was about 10 days old we noticed that she was limping. Upon further looking we thought that she had broken her right ankle. Immediatly called the vet. The vet came out to our property. We took the momma and the baby to the vets stables. He told us at that time the leg was not broken. But everytime she walks the whole hoof just bends under. They put a cast on it for 2 weeks. Still the same. Now the vet is saying that it is a birth defect and that she will heal herself. The weird thing is she runs all over our property with no problem. t is just when she walks. Has anyone heard of this or should I get a new vet. He assures me that it doesnt hurt her at all. Can someone please help me.......

Hello Wendy,
This is simple I believe. Your foal has ruptured her extensor tendon and the vet is right, there is an excellent chance this will heal, so relax. For more information of this see, Equine Diseases: Foal Diseases: Tendon Laxity and Contracture.
