Discussion on Hay, Good or Bad?

Hello, I have some questions that I hope someone can help me with. I have had a very hard time finding a source of good hay out here in "cow country" most of the farmers believe their hay to be good to feed horses, but the truth of the matter is that it is dusty and smelly most of the time.
Recently, I found a source that has beautiful, mostly impeccable hay. Finally!! My question is this, while most of the bales smell sweet and have absolutely no dust whatsoever, a few of the bales have a slightly sour smell when I first open the bale. If I let it set open for a day or so, the smell disappears, and I might add that there is still no dust in these bales. My question is, are these bales moldy, or not?

Hello Deborah,
Weeds can smell sour, see the article associated with this forum for other characteristics of mold in the hay.
