In the winter I give my horses a bran mash once a week. They love it and it makes me feel good.

I'm pretty casual on how I make it, just a half-bucket of warm tap water, a few cups of grain and most of a coffee can of wheat bran. Sometimes it's thick, sometimes it's really soupy.

I realized a side benefit of this on a trip this summer. My mare usually is fine with strange water, but this time it seemed to be taking her a long time to take a drink.

So I made a really soupy mash with her grain (no bran on hand) and she slurped it up. I knew she'd gotten a couple of gallons of water and we were both happy.
