I am currently feeding my mares grass mix hay. Most of the hay is a flat, wide, no leaf, type of grass, which I believe to be fescue. What would be the best way to determine this. Can you recommend any websites that would show good photos of fescue?

Lisa, while you could probably have an agricultural lab or your local extension agent take a look or test, etc., once my pregnant mares reach the 7-month mark, I switch them over to free-choice 100% timothy to which I add a little alfalfa.

"Grass Mix" hay can contain virtually ANYTHING - & unfortunately it can vary from bale to bale.

Due to changes during the growing season it might be difficult to identify a plant by a picture of the leaf without some experience. The shape of the blade (leaf) changes during the season and depending on conditions. For this reason if seed heads are present they are easier to identify. I have included a link in the pasture section (Care for Horses » Pastures: Pasture and Hay) to a site that has nice images.
