HI there!! I read the vitamins an overview article and I am not certain about choline levels. I feed 4 lbs of alfalfa pellets a day to my 1200 lb gelding along with 15 lbs of grass hay and a basic vit/min supplement that has 125 mg of choline per dose. Your article says to look for a supplement with 600 mg of choline. I found an analysis of alfalfa pellets and found them to contain 1656 mg of choline to 1 kg of pellets. Does that sound right and is the amount okay and shall I discontinue my 500 mg choline supplement?

Thank you
Tonja :-)

Choline, though not a true vitamin it is the neccesary building block for several important chemicals the body uses. The choline levels required for maintenance are unknown in the horse and deficiency states have not been reported in the horse. As long as the diet has sufficent good quality protein choline can be synthesized by the body in adequate amounts so it does not have to be in the diet. Dietary choline can be used by the body however. You can discontinue your choline supplementation.
