Hi, Dr. O.
A couple of recent posts re: diarrhea in horses has prompted me to ask about the efficacy of prebiotics over probiotics for equines. I have been told by a horse nutritionist that probiotics work better in Cows, but prebiotics are better for horses. I am feeding prebiotics manufactured by ADEPTUS, to two of my ancient lesson horses and have had great results this winter . . . . (knock on wood) no colic episodes.
Have you heard discussions or read articles dealing with the differences/benefits of these two feed supplements?
Thank you,
Holly

I could not find a universally accepted definition for prebiotics so I am not sure what that means. Even the term probiotic encompases a large number of different products making any universal statements impossible. I went to the site and see that Adeptus uses the term describing one of its products which contains yeast culture products and no live cultures. We cover this in the article » Care for Horses » Nutrition » Probiotics and Yeast Culture Products. In general the nutritionists coments are not founded in any research I have seen.
