Well, after getting home from the feed store with ingredients for "mare's mash," from a very successful local breeder's recipe, it seems this might not be the best course. She strongly advised once a day for the final two weeks' gestation and 2-4 weeks after foaling:

(Sorry, measurements were given to me in "coffee cans")
1/2 can mixed grain (mare's regular feed)
3/4 can wheat bran
1/4 can rice bran
1 can calf manna
made into thick mash with hot water.

Her hay is grass. Is this hopelessly out of balance for calcium/phosphorus? From reading the articles and discussion, my conclusion is yes (?)

It depends on the forage fed, Jerre. If it is alfalfa maybe not. What we need to make a judgement is weights or all feeds, including forage, and the ca / phos content of the other feeds. But you are right it is a bunch of phosphorous and not much calcium, unless some of these feeds are fortified.

Thanks DrO. I am learning so much here, as I spend more time exploring this site.

Her hay is high quality grass.

This might sound silly, but would it work to throw in some Tums? They're 500mg of calcium carbonate per tablet.

Again Jerre, what we need to make a judgement is weights on all feeds, including forage, and the ca / phos content of the commercially prepared feeds.
