Hi Doctor O
I have a two year old that has developed a dish in his left front hoof only. The other three hooves are growing normal. What are your thoughts on the cause and what can be done to correct the problem?

Hello Marlene,
What does your farrier say?

Sometimes a dish like this develops as a horse becomes club footed and the farrier attempts to keep the toes angle looking like the opposite foot. He will leave a bit more toe but due to its length and stress it begins to deform. The result is the belled out horn that is left makes the angle look more like the other front foot.

On the other hand we had a horse come into the hospital the other day, where I thought this was going on and following a fairly normal set of radiographs we began trimming and the upright heel trimmed out easily and the belled out horn rasped away so the foot looked pretty normal when done.

In either case the flaired out horn needs to be rasped away but many of these horses have developed thin soles and to get a proper trimming and prevent lameness you may have to enlist the help of an experienced veterinarian or farrier.
