  Discussion on Grapes? Other fruit?

I know one isn't supposed to feed a dog grapes (not sure why).

What about horses?

I ask because I board my older horse at a farm with some grape vines and the horses love to snack on the grape clusters in late summer after a ride.

What about other fruit such as strawberries, bananas, etc. Can we assume if the horse will take a bite it is safe? I'm not talking huge quantities, but as a treat.

TIA. Cheers.

I've fed my mare bananas and she loves them. She also likes watermelon, sweet potatoes and of course, carrots and apples. I'll only give her 1 banana at a time, every so often, to no ill effect.

Can't speak to any other fruit as I've never tried it. I thought there was some discussion here as to grapes not being a good idea but I can't remember now if that pertained to just dogs or to horses as well.

My horses love grapes, though they only get a few once in a while. They also love all melons, bananas, carrots, apples, fresh corn, beans (off the vine!) rose bushes, strawberries, mints, peanut butter, apricot jam, applesauce, and want to try anything they see you eating. I had one whose most favorite thing in the world was raspberries. A couple of them like beer.Granola bars are considered a special treat on rides. So far, no one has ever seemed to have had a problem with any of it.

This is a occasionally discussed subject and running a search on grapes will bring up the most recent ones.

I used to have 2 plum trees and the horses loved eating the plums. Mine also love blackberries growing wild and watermelon rind. My youngest horse won't take anything new or strange to him unless he sees the other horses eating it first. And the only reason my TB will go to my husband is just to check out if he has a beer.

There was a recent article in one of the horse magazines that discussed things horses like to eat. The experiments done showed a very positive response from horses to bananas. They actually liked bananas better than anything else (including carrots and apples). Not sure about grapes and horses. I think I remember the issue of choking on grapes being a concern with dogs??

I thought you might find the following article from snopes.com interesting: https://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/raisins.asp

I haven't seen anything about horses and grapes but grapes actually pose a greater threat to dogs than choking. Above is a link to SNOPES.com that explains it.

I feed my horse cantelope, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple, peaches, pears, bananas, apples, apricots, watermelon, raisins, strawberries, you name it. Grapes only when I split them open first due to the choking factor. All in moderation of course. I make him fruit bran salads, all kinds of things. When I was in Germany a friend gave me a book on all the things they like to eat. You would be surprised.
