I stored hay last summer in a barn I was fixing up. the big doors on the w side (weather side) were off for a number of months and some of the hay got wet. I can see the obvious mold and yuck on the ends of the bales that got wet. The bales stacked inside of those wet ones (4o bales total, stacked 4 high on pallets) seem ok--green, nice dry flakes, but release white dust when opened. Is this dust or mold? how do you tell the difference? the barn is dusty in dry weather. should I just get rid of the bales I have left? I have been carefully going thru each bale as I use it and throwing away stuff that seems powdery, stuck together etc. My horse seems just fine--no coughing, runny nose at times... I think I may be throwing away hay that is ok...what would you look for??? help! thanks, cindy

Hello Cindy,
You will find a description of how to judge hay including the difference between mold spores and dust at, Horse Care » Equine Nutrition, Horse Feeds, Feeding » Forages for Horses, an Overview. I am betting from your description these are mold spores.
