Early April I was sweeping up hoof trimmings as the farrier was loading his truck. I picked up one piece that had a spot that appeared orange-ish and I asked him about it. He stated (as best I can remember) that it was blood that came to the surface...seems he thought it may have been some bruising. I honestly cant recall exactly what he said. He seemed unconcerned so I didnt worry too much about it. My farrier came again last Friday but I did not think to check hoof trimmings to see if I saw the odd color in the trimmings again. Saturday afternoon my gelding threw his shoe in a shallow water puddle. Basically sucked in clean off. All the nails were still in the shoe when I found it. The horse is not lame but I decided to wrap the hoof with a small diaper and vet wrap just to keep the foot in good shape until I could get the shoe back on. Yesterday as I removed the wrap I noticed that same orangy tint on his hoof wall and around his heel bulb. Any idea from my description what this might be? He really does not seem lame. Just slightly off as he crosses the pavement to the tie area. I am assuming this is normal sensitivity due to being shoeless. All feet are white and only one hoof has this discoloration. thanks!

I should say the bruising on the wall crosses into the sole, too.....

You can see the discoloration on the heel and then on the wall up and around the left side of the picture. And then two large area's close to the toe. The other side of the hoof is similarbruise

Hmmm, that could be a bruise around the heel but the wall color looks like some kind of stain to me but the focus makes it a little hard to say for sure.

I'll try again when I have some help. It was storming out, I was holding the hoof and snapping the picture.
It isn't stain though........

I do use durasol though and that is tinted orange. I guess that may be making it's way
into the sole and wall. I always figured it was all very topical and that it would not absorb quite this way.....

Dr O~ I do believe it IS stain!!
When I worked on his feet tonight those "two large areas near his toe" scraped right off! Could explain why he's not lame! Chalk this one off to over reacting to losing a shoe!!! (the heel seems way better too, so I wonder if that wasn't just discolored too!) Thanks......
