I am going to be breeding my mare this spring, and the owner of the stallion wants me to have my mare vaccinated against strangles. I have my own place, so my horses are not boarded and have never been boarded. A friend of mine told me it is actually a live virus that is used in this vaccine. What are the pros and cons to this subject?

Hello Sherry,
We go into detail about the injectable vs the intranasal vaccine in the Vaccine Overview article associated with this forum. Review it and then if you have any speciic questions bring them here.

Thank you, Dr.O. The article was very imformative. Seems to me the only reason he may want me to vaccinate for strangles is if he has had a problem with it at his barn, and I may want to reconsider if that is the case. Love this site and all the information I have obtained from it!!

While that is a very logical conclusion there is one other interpretation: he thinks vaccinated horses as less likely to bring Strangles to his barn.
