Good morning Doc,
You state in your article that a telltale sign of the onset of heaves is a cough when the horse first starts exercise. Does that mean when you first start to work and he coughs once or twice? Two of my horses do that but don't have any other sign of heaves and our hay is mold free. If I find any mold I remove it immediately. One of our horses did develop heaves for which we treated him and we watch him but he seems to have recovered - he hasn't coughed in over two years.

Thanks DrO

Some horses do have what is called a "barn cough" that never develops into heaves but this should serve as a warning that perhaps the quality of your hay / environment may not be all it should be, particularly since both horses do it. Review the longer article on Heaves at Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Heaves & Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
