My 3 month old philly has ringed hooves. Our farrier seems to think it may have been caused by sudden stops and re-starts in her growth. She is an orphan, but has a surrogate mare since she was 3 days old. Our vet did advise us to quit giving the philly any additional feed, as she is growing too fast. She is a very big 3 month old, yet appears to be very healthy and of course a joy to have on the farm. Anyone have input on these rings? Thanks,

There is always a ring that separates the hoof growth from when the baby was in utero vs that which forms after birth. For more information on the possible causes of other rings see Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Poor Horn Quality: problems with the wall and soles.
