I would like to become familiar with taking my horses pulse, I have heard that under the elbow is a good spot. Any other places? Any tips on pulse taking? Thank you.

Hello Laurie-Ann,
Actually at this point you feel the heart beat against the chest wall not the pulse. You can feel both the lub and the dub of the heart if the horse is still and not too fat. We have a article on taking pulse, temperature, respiration, and some vital signs see, Equine Diseases » First Aid » Taking Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration.

I have read the article you mentioned. It is very helpful. I am still having some trouble locating the pulse. Is it between the hjaw bones or at the throatlatch? Thank you.

Neither Lori,
It is just on the inside of the jaw bone against the bone. You have to reach up under the jaw bone with a finger to find it. On most horses it feels slightly less in diameter than a pencil and "rolls" around.
