Hello Lori,
Horses can develop bony swellings along the lower edge of the mandible (jaw) or along the side of the maxilla (face) in response to the development and growth or the adult cheek teeth (premolars and molars). Many horses do not get remarkable swellings and if they appear it is quite variable with the range from before the first year up to over 4 years of age. Seems like most I have seen were 2 to 3 years old.
