Somewhere I remember hearing that horses shouldn't be allowed to forage on avocado leaves. We're looking for a spot to plant another avocado tree, but the best location would result in some of the leaves blowing into our pasture. Can you tell me if this is a problem or not? Many thanks.

Hi Paula,

My older mare was pastured with avocados for 8 years with no problems. When we built our new house I planted a Sharwell avocado tree, but the older mare kept removing it from the ground.

My vet was out one day to float teeth and we started talking about avos. He told me he had a client with avocado trees also and that one of her 2 horses had died from an allergic reaction. He told me don't take the chance.

I never replanted the tree.

Dr O probably has more scientific info. Leilani

i know they can colic from it. not sure if its just the leaves or the pit and some of the fruit. Living in Florida i've heard a few stories..I would not chance it. Do a google search on avocado and toxic. There are lots of things to read on it.

Rather than a Google search, do a search here this is a often discussed question on Horseadvice and there is no new information I am aware of since our last posting on this subject.
