Dr O-Have you ever heard of a horse having trouble from feeding Source (seaweed as opposed to pure kelp)...the serving size provides 9mg of iodine...which the company says is within safe range...

Hello Leah, Feeding excessive iodine in the form of seaweed has rarely resulted in toxicity (Nippon Juigaku Zasshi. 1978 Dec;40(6):749-53. Nodular goiters of three mares and their foals, induced by feeding excessive amount of seaweed). Whether 9 mg is too much depends on the size of the horse and the iodine content of the feed and other supplements. You will find the recommended ranges of iodine in the feed and the approximate iodine content of common foodstuffs in the article, Care for Horses » Nutrition » Minerals and Nutrition. DrO

Thanks Dr O---have you ever heard of feeding it free choice? I know that is not the company's recommendations but there are several "horse diets" that promote free choice feeding-that just seemed a little risky to me...thought I would ask if you have ever heard of it.

No and certainly do not recommend it. This probably stems from the idea that, "if the horse needs it he will select it and will not consume a toxic amount". We know this is NOT so. DrO
