In talking to a friend who used to show horses, he told me about using apple cider vinegar as a supplement for both joint health & coat conditioner. Dr O, what is your thought on this? Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue, we're using Apple Cider Vinegar against mosquitos since we've moved down to Florida this year. It doesn't seem to work that much for my horse, but my girlfriend's horse has not had a bite in a while. As for the coats, I haven't noticed any dramatic difference since we started feeding in April. Her horse has always had a shiny coat due to Orvus and a lot of grooming and it didn't get any shinier. My horse's coat has never had a great shine in it and ACV didn't put it there either. The most sparkle I've achieved was through lengthy daily grooming for weeks while using a lot of different combs and brushes every day. I used to have an older arthritic and Cushinoid horse on ACV, but it was hard to tell whether it was the the warmer climate or ACV that helped his arthritis.. Happy Trails, Marc.

Hi Marc, Thanks for your input. I never thought of the mosquito aspect for acv. I am going to start mine on either brewers yeast or a super B complex suppliment. I use the super B for my dogs & don't have a problem with fleas, ticks or mosquitos, I'm hoping it will work with the horses. I use the super B because it's water soluble so won't cause any problems. Hi Sue, I used to give my horse apple cider vinegar for joint health and possible protection from enteroliths, but stopped after DrO warned that,as horses are extremely prone to gastric ulcers, giving them acid is not a good idea. Lynn

Lynn, thanks for the info. Did Dr O specify an amount or did he just advise against using it at all? Sue

Sue, he didn't believe it should be given at all. Lynn

Apple cider vinegar is primarily acetic acid and as such can be used by the horse as a energy source. It is unlikely to have any effect on mosquitos or hair coat and other than small amounts as flavoring is difficult to justify as a source of nutrients for the horse. DrO
