Dr. O and others I probably know the answer to this, but if I gave you the name of 3 feeds could you tell me which one you think is best for a barrel/performance horse? Say Ultium, Strategy& Omolene 100 mixed together, and Strategy only. Mainly a feed that does not make a horse "hot." KC

I am not familiar with Ultium KC. It is impossible to evaluate your feeding program without also evaluating your horse's concentrate intake by weight, forage quality and intake, and body condition. Strategy and Omolene are very different feeds for very different circumstances but it is not so much the level of performance as it is these other factors that effect what may be the best food for you. You should review the article on Care for Horses » Nutrition » Nutriton Overview to better understand these principles. Then you may want to review Care for Horses » Nutrition » Performance Nutrition for the latest ideas in making horses go faster through feeding. DrO

Ultium is a very high fat feed. I think 11% protein and 10 or 11% fat. It is great to condition your horse during hard workouts , for endurance horses , showing, or for horses who need high calorie intake with out worring about stomach upset ,you dont have to measure or add extra fat to the diet. I have switched to it and LOVE it. You can give smaller amounts of feed and still keep calories up. I used to use Strategy. Ultium gives calm energy from fat. Does not make them hot at all. Katrina
