I've heard that if you ride a horse with Sports Medicine Boots, or any other of that type of boot that it weakens the tendons because of the heat, and the restriction of movement in the lower leg.
Is there any merit to this?

Hello there

Well in my opinion they are like support tights for us, not all horses need them and also depends on the work but one of our ponies always wore the Wolf tendon boots for Pony Club games and normal riding.

If you feel that your horse needs them you could also use padding and bandages not too tight or they will causes damage.

Kristen,

I've heard the same thing and it does make sense. For the past 3 years if doing lateral work or if he was feeling frisky, my horse just wore brushing boots for protection against nicks.

There are so many variables here that there is no clear answer to your question Kristen. Yes there are certainly cases where horses have injured themselves from boots or wraps that where to tight or left on too long or became twisted. On the other hand well designed boots do give some support and mechanical protection which has protected horses from injury.

You have risks and you have benefits, you minimize the risks and maxamize the benefits through judgement and proper use. I don't think anyone really knows if on balance are these products are doing more good than harm.

Thanks for your replies.
I had someone once explain it in the way of saying that tendons and ligaments are like muscles in the way that they have to be exerted to the proper stress in the appropriate manner in order to strengthen, and the restriction/heat of the boots had the reverse effect. It made sense to me, but I wanted some other opinions as well.
