Dr O.
This foal is 10 days old, developed this swelling (it is hard like a cyst). I don't know if it is the result of toxin or teeth (too young for teeth I think). I have attached a picture and it is clear on the RHS. Benadryl and antibiotics were recommended...does this sound right?

Hello Ilona my companion insomniac! Who is this little cutie anyway? One of your gifted gaiteds to be? Best wishes, sorry I don't know what the lump is but I have never seen one on any of my foals so probably not teeth. Is it tender or warm to the touch? Stacy

From your description and image it is difficult to say more than a firm swelling on the side of the nose with many possibilities Ilona, including blunt trauma with associated periosteal reaction. It would be unusual to have a swelling from a tooth root at this stage but not impossible. The inside of the mouth needs careful examination for packed in food or injury. If after you have carefully looked it over it still has no known cause it will require a hands on examination by a veterinarian and recommend therapy but hard to figure that antihistamines will figure in to any possibility.

Ilona--way off chance, but one of my weanlings gets a swelling like this (freaked me out the first time), and when I stick my fingers in there and feel around, she has a mass of chewed hay waded up next to her cheek! I felt pretty dumb after my initial panic. She has done this many times since. I know it's doubtful, but has anyone fished around in the foals mouth between cheek and jaw?

How is the foal doing Ilona? It seems weird the only thing remotely resembling it was one of my foals who got kicked in the head by his mother[accident mom got over enthusiastic outdoors without all that weight I saw it happen]But that swelling was tender and soft at first.
