Hi there,
Its amazing how much bogus information there is out there about nutrition and I am very grateful for this site so that I can look up actual scientific studies/information about certain promoted feeds & supplements for horses. This site is about the only one that states that horses CAN convert Omega 6 to 3.

Anyway, on to my point!

I would love to become an equine nutritionist. I don't want to be a full on vet, but I do want to take a very serious course, no matter how many years etc., so that I could actually advise people about horse nutrition. I realize that there's a lot of "quacks" out there doing the same thing.

Do you, Dr O, or anybody else, know whether a profession in Equine Nutrition truly exists and, if so, any reputable schools offering such a thing? I realize that some colleges offer limited classes on the subject, but not a full blown deal.

Thank you very much.

Hello Louise,
Thanks for the kudos. Locally equine nutrition is achieved most quickly through a bachelors in animal science or related degree followed by a masters in equine nutrition. I am not sure there are any faster ways to this.

Louise, please contact Dr.Sarah Ralston at Rutgers University Equine Science program. She has done a lot of new research on horse feed and nutrition; and is very helpful with questions.

I realize you are in CA, but she may know of a good program for you.

I am just finishing a course offered online from University of Guelph. Quite a good program - very science-based. Check out their Equine Science Diploma at: https://www.equinesciencecertificate.com/

Good Luck!

Thank you Erika & Cheryl. I am researching both possibilities that you have brought to my attention.

You know what else is scary? My friend's sister just finished vet school (UC Davis) and is still convinced that Beet pulp is laden with sugar. If you come away from vet school thinking that, it really makes you wonder to what extent are they teaching nutrition?!!

I've emailed Dr. Ralston - I would love to be a part of a leading-edge equine nutrition team - even just on a voluntary basis.

Thanks again!
