Discussion on Water Softener Pellets to kill vegetation

Hello all,

It has been suggested to me to use water softerner pellets (99.5% pure salt, small amount of resin-cleaning additives) to kill vegetation. Apparently it is used successfully when creating asphalt driveways.

I want to use it (instead of Roundup) next to my stall to kill weeds and grass. But, I started thinking that it might hurt the wildlife (rabbits and deer) that might eat it because of the salt content.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks in advance for any feedback,

Lilo

Roundup is considered pretty nontoxic and sounds like it has much less salt than the water softener. I am not aware of this use for water softeners.

DrO,

Thanks for your reply. I had not heard of it before either. I do have Roundup - so that is probably the safer route.

Thanks,

Lilo,

We used salt to kill weeds around our rock fence, not water softener salt, but the coarse pickling salt which is edible. Rabbits used to come up to the area and lick it, but it sure didn't seem to effect the rabbit population in our area. We never found any dead ones either. It does work well at killing weeds.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for the feedback. I think I would not worry about pure salt. What I was worried about was the 0.5 percent of "other ingredients" in the
water softener pellets. I am sure it would not be a problem if one covered it up right away, such as with asphalt.
So, I may have wasted my money. Possibly we can use it under the waterhazard near the arena.
Thanks,
Lilo
