Hi,

I am looking for breakaway leather halters for my mares to wear when I haul them. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you. Leilani

Hi, Leilani,

I just purchased a breakaway halter from Country Supply for $15. It's a nylon halter with the leather crown piece and fairly light buckles that attach the crown piece. It's not very fancy (obviously for $15) but I was looking for something to leave on in the pasture that I wouldn't worry about weather damage.

Might be worth a look: https://www.horse.com/Farm-Ranch-Supplies/Safety-Gear/Pro-Craft-Turnout-Safety-Ha lter-BMH16.html

Hi Leilani,

I think using a breakaway halter in the pasture is a good idea, but I discourage using them for trailering. The main reason is if there's an emergency and you need to get the horse out of the trailer you can't safely handle the horse without a halter. Secondly a little loop of leather is cheap and you don't have the cost of buying more halters.

I recommend using regular halters and connecting the trailer tie to the halter with what's called a fuse. The fuse is just a loop of leather, or other material, that will break. Now the horse will breakaway from the trailer tie but still has a halter on for easy control.

I was taught years ago to leave the lead rope attached to the halter and loop it over the horse's neck when traveling. All my horses are trained to travel this way, we've traveled hundreds of miles without incident, and the advantage is you don't have to go hunting for lead ropes in an emergency.

Good day,
Alden

Alden that really is a great tip for the trailer, a fuse!

For the pasture if I want to keep a halter on I use the breakaway halters too and I feel safer. And they do break, so you will have to get some replacement straps when they eventually do.
