Hi, I put a Davis Soaking boot on my foal and can't get it off - any suggestions? He has thrush, though we are very dry here in CA - and he won't put his foot in a bucket so I bought him this boot. It seemed just a bit big for him had a little trouble getting it on, but not much. I don't want to cut if off as I just bought it. Any suggestions? Also, along the same lines - he is more comfortable in the boot and walks less stiff as he seems to have pain in that hoof - can I leave this boot on for days? The Davis Boot website is not much help. Parts say it is a great boot for bruises and protects the sole but doesn't say if it is safe to leave on. I did put betadine in the boot after I put it on, so the environment is wet/warm. Probably the worst for leaving on after 15 minutes - but I can't get it off. Thanks, Kathy

Hi Kathy, Soapy water should do the trick. It's worked for me in the past getting it on and off. Hope it works for you. Cheers, Ruth

Or try baby oil. His hoof may have swollen from the moisture and the oil might let it slip off easier. I wouldn't leave it on, all that moisture trapped is a good breeding ground for gunk. Erika

I agree either (but not both) lubricant suggested above or cut it off, leaving it on is a recipe for disaster due to the moisture trapped in it. Oh it just occurred to me if you need to cut it cut it with a single cut straight down the back of the boot so that you can reapply it and tape it together. Removing the tape will make removig the boot easy. DrO

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was able to remove it. I do think cutting it down the back is a great idea and will make the on and off process easier. His hoof and leg seemed much better too. What is the longest time to leave something like this on? He has thrush on the tip of his toe. The shoer dug up about a 1/2" and said to soak it in betadine 2 times a day - I tried applying with a syringe, but getting it to go up the hole is difficult and didn't seem to really penetrate as there is no crack. Thanks everyone. Kathy

Could you plug the hole with betadine-soaked cotton, Kathy?
