Hi
I am wondering if anyone has used the Southern States pasture balancer tub? If so,, did you like it? Did your horses eat too much or turn up their nose?
Im thinking of putting one in my pasture this summer (esp. if theres another DrOught.)
Thanks for any insight.

Hi Leslie, I'm not sure what is in the tub you are talking about, but we have the pasture tubs for horses around here (not Southern States) all of them are molasses based and my horses LOVED them...a little too much! When Hank was a young fellow I had put one out and he went through a lot overnight and ended up with diarrhea

They were obsessed with it, so I had to remove it and just put it out for a few hours a day. Don't get them anymore! If the one you are looking at isn't molasses based you probably wouldn't have a problem, but a good vit./min supplement would probably work just as well?

Hi Leslie,
I had a similar experience to Diane: the BO put out big tubs of mineral supps in a molasses base (not sure what brand) in the summer. The horses loved them and would stand over them using their teeth to grind off as big of a bite as they could manage.

I was a bit concerned as I thought they may be getting more minerals than they needed and because I didn't think using the front teeth to grind these things down was a good idea. So, like you, I posted here, listing the ingredients. DrO didn't think it was a good idea (in fact, DrO said something like, "why would anyone use these things?") So, I mentioned it to the BO, she gave them to the horses for about an hour a day until they were used up and went back to normal mineral blocks....much to the disappointment of the horses, I think.

Thanks guys
I will assume they are probably the same as yours...molassas based.
These one have protein in them as well as vit/min. so I thought they might be a good idea if the grass gets stressed again this year.
But... I definately dont want them standing around eating 'sugar'.
Thanks again;)
