After several lackluster performances by my 3 year old colt and ruling out, EPM, sickness, lameness and infection. The vet and I decided to treat him for allergies with antihistimines and Azium. The vet asked me if he was a good eater and I said yes. I was to mix the small packages of Azium into the entire container of antihistimines, mix it well and give him 2 scoops morning and night in his feed. Well, he ate it the first day, but day two was another story, he did not eat it. SO, I mixed it with applesauce and squirted it down his throat. So, I thought all was well. I went back to his normal feed with no medication for dinner, he did not eat, same thing on day three, colt did not eat. Now, my OCD sets in and I am worried that this horse is thinking I poisoned his food and he is never going to eat again or that the medication is making him go off his feed even if it is not in his feed tub any longer, so today I stop the medication and try and feed him his dinner, he does not eat, smells it and walks away and goes and eats his hay. Then I remembered (lightbulb goes off in horse owners head), I just got a new order of garlic and the smell is much stronger than what he has been getting. I dump the feed and wash out the tub and give him some feed without the garlic, and guess what he eats his feed. I feel so silly, I should have known. He does not like garlic as it is but eats it as long as I put some molasses in his food and mix it well. The strong smell of the new garlic batch completely backed him off his feed. Here I thought it was a reaction to the medicine and instead it was to a new batch of garlic. I feel better, my horse will not starve to death. Rachelle

Shannon, Unfortunately for me, I was halfway home when that lightbulb went off, I turned around and went back just to see what he would do. Why could the lightbulb have gone off when I was at the barn. He ate all his breakfast like a good boy this morning too, so it definitely was the garlic. Glad I gave you a chuckle, gave me one too after I realized the problem. Rachelle
