Dr.O. if a horses has been given the initial shot series with booster, then a year is skipped does it need to be boostered again? For ex... horses given WNV vaccine + boostered (FD brand)2007 2008...single vaccine 2009...skipped all together 2010... booster needed again? Thanks

Hello Diane, I believe the vaccine companies position is yes but for less than 1 year over I don't routinely rebooster. I have no proof this is safe. I might reconsider if I was in the middle of a outbreak of whatever I was vaccinating for. DrO

Thanks Dr.O. my vet said the same thing when I asked him today. I want to give my horses prevenile by intervet since they don't get along well with FD brand stuff... but the cost is very high for 3 horses + I would I have to give an EWT also. I asked at the office and they charge $35 for Prevenile, I usually buy the EWT myself and that comes to about $15 per horse ..... I'm not sure if the extra savings...which would be about $100 if including the call out is worth the risk . It has been the Rabies shot that has gotten all 3 of them in the past...with Hank being especially bad, so am sticking with Equirab for that after no reactions at all last year. I forgot to give them WNV.... Last year went so well with just the Intervet EWT and the equirab it was quite amazing. I looked up the 2009 Il cases of WNV and it says 6 horses and other animals (so of the 6 all were not horses and none were in our county) I wonder if it would be irresponsible of me to just skip it again
