Discussion on Soft spot in frog

I noticed last night my gelding has a soft spot in the frog of his LH at the rear of the central sulcus. I borrowed a pic of this site to mark the location (hope that's OK Dr. O?); it's marked with a blue circle.

soft spot in frog

There is no thrush evident, the surface of the frog is clean and not ragged at all, he recently exfoliated his frogs quite a bit. The rest of the frog feels normal, like pressing on a tensed muscle, but when I press at this spot it feels like pressing on a rare piece of steak.

He doesn't really seem painful when I poke/press on the area, but he does flinch ever so slightly. One of those reactions where if I didn't know the horse I wouldn't notice it.

The other hind does have some thrush and has a very deep central sulcus which is a little tender and we are treating.

Any idea what this soft area might be?

Hello Shannon, this area between the bulbs (note the circled area is not on the sole but a little dorsal to it) is normally a soft, does the tissue look abnormal?

Thanks Dr. O. The tissue looks entirely normal, there is no deep cleft like there is on the other hind that we are treating for thrush. The spot seems to me considerably softer than on the other feet, though yes on the others that area is soft, just not so much so. I wouldn't think much of it if he hadn't flinched a bit when I was poking at it.

Maybe totally normal and I was just poking too hard on a sensitive spot? Poor horse .. his owner is just looking for trouble I guess... :-)
