I give my CTR horse about 2 pounds (dry weight) of beet pulp in addition to his regular feed (1 lb morning and 1 lb nite) for additional fiber. My local feed store has switched from shreds to pellets. Is there any nutrition/fiber difference between the two? I'm a "soaker" and my horse eats both equally well, altho I will say that the soaked shreds look more appealing :-)

Thanks,

Mary

Hello Mary, it depends on how highly processed the pellets are. If they are cut fine and steamed prior to pelleting (very likely) there may be a slight decrease in the non-digestible fiber and certainly the fiber will be of a shorter length. Though nutritionally this is not a big deal it may provide less "scratch factor" which might increase wood chewing.

Thanks Dr O- I've found another feed store that carries the shreds (although not my regular feed) Guess I'll be making 2 stops :-)

Mary I prefer the shreds to pellets, if for no other reason than it takes less soaking time. Though the brand we use looks identical after soaking.
