I am doing some reading on caring for a foundered horses hooves and I read " do not cut holes in the soles of laminitis or acute founder cases. This will result in granulating solar corium protruding through the hole, which is difficult to control". What is granulating solar corium? What does it look like? Why is it difficult to control?

HI karen I believe granulating solar cornium would be like proud flesh and look like proud flesh and proud flesh can be hard to control (my guess)! Having a foundered horse, the sole is always considered sacred ground and never touched UNLESS there is way too much exfoliating sole built up, and at that we are very careful.

Lets see, yes this would look like proud flesh: red and bleeds easily but I am unsure about the admonition over control. For a horse with uncomplicated founder it does not make sense to cut holes in the sole but some founders develop abscesses which should have the puss drained either through the sole or wall. I have drained many such abscesses and with proper care have not had problems with excessive granulation tissue when treated as in our article. For more on these subjects see: 1) Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels 2) Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » The Treatment of Proud Flesh or Exuberant Granulation Tissue DrO
