Do you oil your rasp & knifes after each use ?
I started oiling my tools after use and am finding that debris is now sticking to it . when I had a "dry" rasp, it looked nice and clean after use !?

I was told by the guy I order my rasps from to spray with WD-40 and wrap the rasp in brown paper. Like a grocery sack opened up. I wrap it and tie a piece of rawhide around it.

I asked about spraying with Kool-Lube, he said that was fine also; that's what I use.

I don't do anything to my knives.

I have found that when I was spraying my hoofs with Tea Tree Oil & water, then my rasps started getting rusty. ;-(.

A stiff wired brush should clean your tools off during use.

Thanks Angie.
Why do you spray hoofs with tea tree oil ?

Tea Tree Oil is antifungal, antibacterial. I was seeing some signs of thrush. On the yahoo "barefoot trimming" groups, there are a few different recipes. I used about 20 DrOps in water in a one quart spray bottle. I figured it would help prevent spreading the thrush if indeed that is what I was seeing. I also sprayed my knives and hoof picks.

I do not oil my rasp or hoof knife Anna, I just keep them clean and dry with the occasional use of a small stainless steel wire brush on the rasp to remove dirt. Rasp away from the cutting edges of the rasp. In spite of this I occasionally have a little rust form on my rasp but it is of no consequence.

Thank you all for your advise / experience. You will laugh when I tell you I used olive oil - I was worried that rust sets in and will blunt my instruments.

Anna, if it gets real rusty on the raised cutting edges it will blunt the rasp but I don't have that problem if I keep it clean with a brush and dry. If I had the problem I would probably use something real light like WD40 and wipe the excess off with a rag.
