I am feeding a Vit E supplement to a horse with neurological problems. I can get the man-made material which is a powder. I can also get the gel caps that are sold for people. I was told that I needed to puncture the gel cap and squeeze out the Vit E from the gel cap.

I have asked several vets if I could instead feed the gel caps without puncturing them. No one seems to know if the gel cap is or isn't broken down in the horse's gut to release the Vit E. Does anyone know if a study has been done to answer this question?

Thanks,

Mary

Hi Mary,

I have given my 2 mares 1k IU Vit E d-Alpha human grade for about 3 years now. I haven't experienced any problems. I order Puritan's Pride through Amazon.com.

Don't know about such a study but I used to give the gel caps to my horses and simply DrOpped them into their feed pans.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't break down and be utilized just as they are in humans.

I have read that the D-Alpha Tocopheryl is much better than the mixed Tocopheryl types.

No study but since these are water soluble they will dissolve fine in the GI tract.

I always squeeze them but only because some horses 'sort them out' and then not eat them.
Had never thought about the dissolving part! I keep learning!
