Thanks Angie (and Holly), This dissertation is in line with our often made recommendation of trimming the posterior walls of the heel (the angle of the bars) down to even with or in contact with the frog as a way of maintaining proper coffin bone alignment with the ground and avoiding long heels. I often find that when trimmed to this level and then some concavity is made in the sole in this area it still does not take it to the well hydrated yellow sole, the live sole he talks about, but just short of there. Care must be used in applying these ideas to the horse with DDF contracture as floating those heels can result in DDF tendonitis. How to tell the difference? Usually the horse with DDF contracture will be slightly over at the pastern (the pastern angle greater than the hoof's angle with the ground) whereas the poorly trimmed horse slightly under. DrO
