My 15 year old gelding reacted to his 4 way (EEE, WEE, Tetanus, West Nile) combo vaccine 2 years ago. He stumbled and went to his knees but recovered quickly on his own after about 10 minutes. Last year he showed no reaction at all. It's time to vaccinate again and I was told by a friend who went thru a similar reaction with her horse, to grind up about 25-40, depending on the size of the horse, benadryl tabs, mix with water and shoot it into the horse's mouth with a syringe prior to vaccination. My question - is there any possible side affects that my horse could experience from the Benadryl? I don't want to ADD more problems by trying to ADD a fix with a potential side affect before I even vaccinate???

Hello Sheri,
You can read about antihistimine use in horses including a Benadryl dosage at HorseAdvice.com » Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Antihistamine Use in Horses.

Thank you. I found and read the articles. Like everything else in life, I guess there is inherent risk with every decision we make. It's a matter of weighing the risks I guess and determining what I am prepared to risk? I don't want him to colic from the Benadryl, but I don't want him to react to the vaccine either.

LOL...no easy answer is there ...

It may help to know that there are several type of allergic reactions (most list 4) and your reaction does not sound histamine related. What was the time between the injection and falling down and why do you think it was caused by the injection?
