17 y/o APHA mare. Moderate condition - little ribby the past few weeks but have recently increased her work about 2-3hrs. more per week. Light work only. Currently gets 6lbs of 13% Hay pellets, 1 lbs Endurance (11%protien, 6.5% fat, 8% fiber, Phosphorus .5%, Vit a 5,000 IU - put recommended ration is 5-10 lbs, so lets say she get 1/4 of the daily dose). She is fed about 15 lbs. mixed orchard/alfalfa hay daily and leave a few stems behind, moderate quality hay but quality can vary to moderate-poor, but not much. No real grass in her turnout to add to calories just enough to giver her something to do). Stable owner suggest taking off the Endurance 1 lbs of grain, since there is no real supplemental value of phosphorus, ect at 1/4 of the serving and adding MVP (24% protien, Fat 3.%, fiber 11%, calcium 3%, phos 1.7%, Vit a 25,000 IU). The Carb content of the MVP is good at ESC 4.3 and starch 5.5 (she is getting older), The endurance rates are higher 5.9 ESC and 23.8 Starch, but she gets 1/4 portion. Is the MVP and Hay equalling too much Protein? I'm also concerned that the Vit A is too high.

1 lbs of the MVP is the recommened serving size, bulk quantity of food would not change but protein to carb ratio would be different

I've been having excellent results with Tizwhiz - Broodmare for my preggos and 16 for my open TB, they're all thriving...

You're welcome, my boys do great on LMF but the mares, they are doing extremely well on the Tizwhiz... Turned my too skinny TB mare back to health, vim & vigor... She's more active, her ears are pricked all the time & she's much happier.

Hello Erin, Since we do not know the protein content of your hay we don't know if you may be feeding more protein than is necessary with your concentrates and supplements. Certainly a good alfalfa grass mixture will contain plenty of protein for the horse. To help you get the proper perspective on your question about protein read the protein subtopic in HorseAdvice.com » Horse Care » Equine Nutrition, Horse Feeds, Feeding » Equine Nutrition an Overview of Feeding Horses. I think it will answer your questions. On the other hand if your horse is on the thin side I would not be decreasing the overall foodstuffs. I don't know what to think about your stable owner's phosphorous comment since the reason for the supplement is not phosphorous but to add energy and protein which both should help a thin horse gain weight. Platinum Performance Healthy Weight also helps if your horse is thin... Expensive but good stuff. Wellness is great stuff as well. My vet thinks it's pretty spiffy too.
