I was at a vaccination protocol seminar at our local vet college (WCVM) in Saskatoon, SK Canada and the Merck rep referred to a new 6-way vaccine (Prestige V + WNV). My question is this? Is that not a lot to put into a horse at one time? Should it be split up? Is there more of a risk of reaction in a 6-way multivalent? I've used 4-way before but never 6-way!

I just did these shots on three of my horses last week with no reactions. One of my horses she is 17 has a tendency to reactions so they give her Benamine before the shot. And every one was fine even her. I did in the past only 4 and 5 way. 4 ways not recommended anymore. Plus on top of 6 way they got rabies too. So I don't know if it causes any other side effects. So far everything looks good.

Hello Sherri,
Combination vaccines have been around for a long time and I do not know of any work that says they are more likely to have problems or less efficacious. When compared with giving the vaccines individually. In fact many horses that have reactions may not be sensitive to the antigens that protect against disease but the nonspecific immune boosters called adjuvants. Combination vaccines expose horses to less adjuvant than multiple injections do.

I have a stallion that has not been used for breeding for several years ( I had to sell my mare due to illness), mainly because we had his semen frozen years ago and have only offered frozen for shipping to outside mares. I have someone interested in fresh semen shipping in a month from now. His vaccines are overdue and this person wants to breed in june. Is it absolutely necessary to give any vaccines before collection, if his coggins is up to date and negative and he is not exposed to other horses? He has been in a pasture by himself for over 2 years with no exposure to other animals (that i am aware of) and is healthy. Is there any chance that a 6-way can affect his sperm count, motility, or viability? Also, if I have to give them, which ones are mandatory?

Welcome Maryann,
I believe we can help you with your question but let me get you started off right so you can get the best answer as quick as possible.

You will get more responses if you start your own discussion rather than post at the bottom on another member's discussion. Each discussion is "owned" by the original poster and all replies in that discussion should either directly or indirectly address the concerns of the original poster.

To start your own discussion back up one page using the navigation bar at the top of this page. This will be a Article Page on this topic. Below the article you will find a list of already existing discussions on this topic. Under this list you will find the "Start New Discussion" button. This is a good topic on your subject so you should first review the article as it will have important information on your subject. Next check the titles of the already existing discussions to see if your question has already been answered.

If your question remains unanswered, now is the time to Start a New Discussion. Select a short title that describes your specific concern. A title like "Help!!!" does not help others find your specific topic. Instead something like "Ace for Colic?" allows others to rapidly find and understand what your topic is about just by viewing the title. This is likely to bring more responses from those with some experience with your topic and allows members to find answers to their questions quicker.
