Hi, This week my husband bought some 12% generic TSC pelleted horse feed and Nutrena Safe Choice. He mixed them in one storage container. When I went to feed today I found small white fuzzy hard seed-like pieces in the pellets. I have attached a picture. Can anyone tell me what this might be? I cannot determine if it is something that was not ground during the pellet process or a foreign object. I don't know if I should feed any of it or if I could just pick this stuff out and it will be okay. I plan on taking the pieces back to TSC but any ideas or if you have seen this before would be appreciated.

Pictures a little small. How big are these? They kind of look like owl pellets (DrOppings.) But not sure if they are large enough. I for one wouldn't feed it until I found out what these were.

Might just be concentrated pieces of feed, vitamins or minerals. I have had that in some feeds. I've also had bird seed in my horse feed, although this is obviously not the case here! This kind of thing always makes me rather paranoid.

They are about a 1/2 inch long. Actually, I think they are cotton seeds. Doing some searching, some people complained of finding something like this in TSC beet pulp and were told they were cotton seeds. I did an image search of cotton seeds and they look a lot like them. Has anyone ran into cotton seeds in their pellets?

Had my local feed/seed guy confirm these are cotton seeds that some how made it through the pellet making process whole. I see cotton seed as an ingredient in Safe Choice, the TSC feed doesn't have an exact ingredient list so I am leaning that it was in the Safe Choice but have contacted both feed producers.

glad you found out what they were. When I used to buy oats from our local mill, I found all kinds of weird things in the feed; owl DrOppings, what looked like sweepings from the floor, etc. I soon switched to triple cleaned race oats bought elsewhere. You get pretty paranoid when you read articles about botulism etc. Glad you played it safe.
