One week ago farrier found large gravel (about the size of end of thumb) one inch deep behind hoof wall. Horse was not lame at time or since the trimming. It is front hoof on the inside, he is barefoot with healthy hooves - no history of abscesses or laminitis. I check his hoof 2x a day and 1x a day, I wash it out with betadine, pack with ichthammol and push one cotton ball into hole. I know it will take 6 -8 weeks for this to grow and be trimmed out. Should I be doing anything else to prevent an infection to white line? I guess farrier could apply hard filler but didn't know if this would seal bacteria inside. Horse is out on pasture as usual and has access to pond. I am riding him in boots until this is resolved. Does anyone have another suggestion for me? Thanks!

Hello Ann,
As long as all the horn appears healthy in the hole I would just keep it packed with cotton soaked in 100% povidone (Betadine) solution and leave out the icthammol. If there is cracking or a pit this should be pared out until just healthy horn exists. Hard filler should not be used.

Thank you Dr. O for confirming the hard filler is not to be used. Looking at the huge hole every day is scary. The farrier pared out everything.
