My horses are backyard horses with very little or no exposure to other horses. However, I do take them camping now and again where I will come in contact with public equestrian facilities. We are in Northern California and predominantly travel to the high sierras to camp/ride.

I'm somewhat confused by the EHV-1 recommendations that I find on the internet. I've read both that the EHV-1 vaccine may reduce the possibility of an EHM (neurological form) infection, and also that it may encourage it.

Thoughts?

Hello Laurie,
The problem is that all vaccines are not created equal. We have information on this controversy in the article HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Nervous System » Incoordination, Weakness, Spasticity, Tremors » EHV-1 (Equine Herpes) Myeloencephalopathy. Be sure to read the postings to that article (at the bottom of the page) as it has recent research information of interest.
