I'm wondering what could be causing the awful odor of my horse's gas. It smells like someone nearby is having their septic tank pumped. It's been this way since last spring. He's 7 years old, gets mainly bermuda grass, a little alfalfa and two cups of calf manna each day. He was strictly on bermuda most of last year before this fall when I noticed he had lost a lot of weight, which was unusual for him. He was previously a porker. Thinking back, last spring I had bought a batch of grass/alfalfa from out of state, and had to throw some of it out because of mold. Is it possible this is the culprit? We ran out back in March so I don't know if that could be it or not. Should I start eliminating parts of his feed to see if it is something he's eating? He's eaten all of these before with no problem. Is there some sort of blood test I should ask my vet to perform? Are there any intestinal problems that may cause this? Worms? We worm every 3 months. It is very sandy here. Could an excess of sand in the gut cause this? Thanks, Teri P.

I think it is most likely something the horse is eating and I would start with eliminating the Calf-Manna and give it 3 weeks. The answer to all your other questions is no, though your deworming program may be inadequate. DrO
