I am about to take the shoes off my gelding, and in a past forum read some one talking about a paste or something that the vet had made up to harden off or protect the foot until it became tough enough has anyone heard of this. Do you know what it is made up of. I am very interested to learn more about it.

There is a product you can try called Keratex, it is a liquid that you paint on the hoof wall and sole, you only paint the lower half of the hoof.
You use it 3 times a week for the first two weeks then once a week for maintenance.
It has really helped my mare that is now barefoot for the first time since she was three.
I ordered it online from Keratex, I forget the URL, but I found it by running a search on it.
It is pricey, $39 for a bottle, but it does really work well.

Hello Susan,
The article on Hoof Care and many of the forum posts in this section contain advice for taking care of sensitive feet.

A similar product to Keratex is Crossapol. This product is substantially cheaper than Keratex (e.g. half the cost) and works just as well. I bought it I would guess 6 weeks ago to try on my TB who just trashes his feet between shoeing. The improvement in hoof quality has been dramatic and it looks as though he will get out bar shoes in the hear future (hooray!!!)
