  Discussion on Stretched White Line

Is a stretched white line ever not caused by laminitis? My new natural trimmer insists that all my horses must be laminitic because:
1. My gelding who had very, very very long toes and underrun heels has a stretched white line.
2. My older TB mare has shallow collatoral grooves.
3. They all have some degree of rings in their hoof walls.
Can someone help me to understand how a horse with no weight problem, no history of laminitis and no lameness can be laminitic?

Yes Pamela,
Your farrier is incorrect if he feels these are the only causes of the changes you are seeing in the feet. A stretched white line can also be do to long toe low heel conformation / trimming of the feet. I don't know of any relation between shallow collateral grooves and founder. And there are many causes of rings in feet, for more on other causes see Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Poor Horn Quality: problems with the wall and soles.
